Every year, and this 41st edition is no exception, ECOC is the leading forum in Europe for keeping up with the top research advances and scientific discoveries in the field of optical communications and related photonic technologies. With a global attendance and delegates coming from all over the five continents, ECOC provides a unique opportunity for networking and interaction that nobody interested in the field should miss. As we like to say from this year's organizing committee, ECOC is yours!
This 41st edition is held in Spain for the third time after the editions of Barcelona (1986) and Madrid (1998) and in this occasion our venue is Valencia, the third largest city in our country. Valencia is unique in combining Mediterranean tradition and modernity in its cultural offer, first-class blue-flag beaches and it is, in fact, the home of one of the universal dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine, the Paella.
ECOC2015 continues the new distribution in seven main areas that was offered last year for the first time. The technical content of each one has been supervised by a specific subcommittee that, as tradition rules, is composed by world renowned experts and chaired by distinguished scientist. All in all, an impressive Technical Programme Committee composed of 109 members has selected a total of 400 oral and poster presentations, which include a blend of tutorials, invited and contributed papers. Following the trend of last years, spatial division multiplexing, datacenter communications, advanced modulation formats, DSP post-processing in coherent systems and network function virtualization (NFV) continue to be hot topics, while the programme also includes rising star topics such as flexgrid and superchannels, advanced Silicon and InP integrated optics, multicore fiber technologies, MIMO communications and radio over fiber technologies for emerging 5G, access and in-home networks. In addition and, as it is also a tradition, six one-day workshops focusing on specific hot topics will be offered on the conference opening day.
ECOC2015 Plenary session, open to exhibitors, will feature speakers from academia and industry who will share a common denominator of addressing very relevant topics of present and future interest to our community. Inspiring talks will be given by Sir David Payne, Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton; Mr. Enrique Blanco, Global CTO of Telefónica, Spain; Dr. Thibaut Kleiner, Head of Unit "Network Technologies" at the European Commission DG CONNECT and Dr. Andreu Vea, Digital Champion for Spain.
ECOC 2015 will hold two technical symposia, both of which will be unique and special. 2015 is the international Year of Light and ECOC2015 includes a special commemoration symposium, Light: Enabling the Global Internet Era, where distinguished keynote speakers will address how optical technologies have been responsible for the transformation in communications, the evolution of the Internet as we have experienced it in the last two decades, and why they will play an ever-increasing role in tomorrow’s communication networks. A second symposium, Optical Communications and Networks for Datacenters, held in remembrance of our colleague Professor Ham Dorren, will focus on discussing the requirements, challenges and solutions for the next-generation datacenters.
We wish you to have instant access to information at all times and also to interact with us and other colleagues via our 300 Mb/s wireless network provided by Telefónica. Check our conference webpage, use our especially developed conference App or simply interact by tweeting #ECOC2015 and giving us feedback (@ECOC2015).
Last, but not least, the traditional Post-deadline session on Thursday afternoon will give attendees the opportunity to listen on-site to the last-minute new and significant research results in rapidly evolving topics.
In parallel with the conference, the ECOC exhibition will cover a wide range of optical communications products and services and is expected to attract more than 300 exhibitors. We strongly encourage you to attend it!
As ECOC 2015 organizers we believe that it is very important to keep the traditions that have contributed to its long-standing success, but at the same we have tried to experiment and innovate both in the technical and social programmes. For the first time, ECOC will hold a young researcher's meeting after the get together drink on Sunday and will hold a rump session Optical innovation, quo vadis? on Monday, where assistants will have the opportunity of debating while enjoying Spanish wine and tapas. The rump session will be held after the Welcome Reception that will include traditional Spanish food, drinks and a flamenco performance. ECOC poster session on Tuesday will be co-located with a free-of-charge Valencian wine and beer tasting. Finally the Gala Dinner on Wednesday will be held at the Las Arenas Balneario Resort - Luxury 5 star hotel in Valencia seaside, created with the objective of restoring the beaches of Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa in the sea front of Valencia city. The building, with a classical look, combines the architectural beauty of the historical Balneario Las Arenas resort, founded in 1898, with the elegance and comfort of modern design, occupying an exceptional seaside location.
We look forward to meeting you in Valencia for this 41st edition!
